Chapter Five

Mirren

Even though we’re going out on Friday night, Cam starts coming into the bakery every morning for coffee. He walks with Loren and me to school, and I love seeing him with my daughter. He’s eternally patient with her, stopping to examine rocks and seashells, and answering all of her questions. And if he doesn’t know an answer, he finds the answer and tells her the next day, like it was the most important thing in the world to him.

As cautious as I try to be, it makes my heart soar. Loren deserves that kind of attention and respect, and I’d been so worried with her not getting it from her dad that I tried to make up for it. It’s exhausting trying to be both parents. Cooking and cleaning and paying the bills while also trying to teach her and play with her and enjoy our time together. Watching Cam with her, it’s like a weight lifts off my shoulders.

Things are starting to feel serious very quickly. Even though it’s still exciting and new, I know that I have to talk to him at dinner about serious matters—like what the future might hold. Because as a mom, I can’t afford not to think about those things.

At six o’clock, I walk Loren next door to Sunny, who offered to babysit. I’ve never asked before, but she’s always offered, and seemed excited when I told her I needed her help.

“Loren and I will have a sleepover,” she’d said. “And maybe you can have a sleepover of your own.”

When she opens the door, she’s already in her onesie pajamas and holding a huge bowl of popcorn and chocolates. Loren squeals excitedly and dashes inside to put down her backpack.

“Are you sure?” I ask Sunny, standing nervously in her doorway. I feel a little guilty since Loren spent last weekend with her dad and I’m pawning her off on a babysitter now.

But Sunny shoos me away, already shutting the door in my face. “Girl, if I see you before dawn, it had better be because the date sucked, not because you’re worried about us. The two of us will be just fine. Promise.”

I take her at her word and make it to the River House, Haven Fall’s fanciest restaurant—which is to say it has real tablecloths and actual silverware—before six thirty, when we’re supposed to meet. To my surprise, Cam is already there. How strange it is not to be the one doing all the waiting and chasing—to be desired and appreciated.

He looks amazing dressed up in pressed khakis and a button-up shirt. The sleeves are rolled up to reveal muscled forearms. His black hair is slicked back, and his beard is freshly trimmed, the lines neat around his plump lips. I greet him with a peck on the corner of his mouth, even though I’d much rather drag him to my car and ravish him in the parking lot.

“You look beautiful,” he says, admiring my black dress, which is one of the nicest items I own.
